Laurel James, Soprano
Laurel James has appeared in many productions with the Utah Opera including “Hansel & Gretel, The Taming of the Shrew, L’Enfant et les Sortileges and Mozart’s “The Impresario.” Recently, Ms. James appeared with the Eugene Ballet Company on their Northwestern tour of “Carmina Burana” and sang the soprano solos. As winner of the Utah Division of the Metropolitan Opera Auditions, she subsequently became a regional finalist in Denver. She placed among the top 24 out of 800 internationally auditioned singers at the MacAllister Awards for professional opera singers.
Judith Engel, Alto
This past season, Judith Engel performed Anmeris to rave reviews with The El Paso Opera Productions of Aida. Other performances included Handel’s Messiah with Masterworks Chorale at Carnegie Hall, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Richmond Symphony, Brahms’ Alto Rhapsody with Bethel College, and Mendelssohn’s Elijah with Youngstown Symphony. Ms. Engel has sung under such conductors as Charles Dutoit, Isaiah Jackson, Yves Abel, Martin Behrmann, Raymond Harvey, John deMain, and many others during her professional career.
David N. Gustafson, Tenor
David Gustafson made his professional operatic debut in his hometown of Eugene, Oregon with the Eugene Opera in December, 1997 as Tamino in Mozart’s The Magic Flute. He then went on to enthusiastic reception by San Francisco audiences when he performed several operas in rapid succession with the renowned Pocket Opera of Donald Pippin. Mr. Gustafson received a Bachelor of Music from the University of Oregon School of Music and has plans to appear with the Eugene Symphony and Eugene Opera this season, in addition to his soloist performance with the Eugene Concert Choir.
Tony R. Dillon, Bass
Mr. Dillon has appeared with Opera Companies and Symphonies in the United States, the former Soviet Union and Central America. Among his roles on stage and in concert are: Don Pasquale, Don Giovanni, Sarastro, Dr. Dulcamara, Sparafucile, Mephistopheles, and a variety of 30 other characterizations. Upcoming performances include the role of Don Basilio in New York City Opera’s National Tour of II Barbiere di Siviglia and Grenvil in Cleveland Opera’s production of La Traviata. Mr. Dillon is a student of Jerome LoMonaco. He is the honored recipient of the 1987 Opera Renaissance Award.
