Johannes Brahms composed Ein deutches Requiem (A German Requiem) in the language of his people, rather than in the traditional liturgical Latin text, because he wanted the people to understand and deeply relate to the words. He considered naming it “A Human Requiem,” as it speaks to all people of all faiths about the preciousness of our mortal existence. The soaring melodies and lush harmonies have made this extraordinary masterwork one of the most beloved and enduring choral expressions of comfort of all time. As we bring our season to a close, we remember all those we have lost to the COVID-19 global pandemic. The Eugene Concert Choir and Artistic Director and Conductor Dr. Diane Retallack will perform this beautiful memorial work by invitation at Carnegie Hall on June 20, 2022.
