At the turn of the 19th century, Vienna, Austria was culturally alive with the music of legendary well-known composers Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, Beethoven, and their contemporaries, including Marianna von Martines, whose spirited choral masterwork Dixit Dominus we feature in this performance. Salon concerts were elegant affairs with the finest artists performing arias, art songs, and instrumental chamber music. Our stellar soloists will treat us to gorgeous arias by Mozart – “Ach, ich fühl’s” from The Magic Flute and “Il mio Tesoro” from Don Giovanni, and two dramatic art songs by Schubert – Ständchen and Der Erlkönig.
Marianna von Martines, a superb and respected performing artist and composer of her time, studied with Haydn (who lived upstairs in the Martines household) and played four-hand piano pieces with Mozart. We can picture this duo as our pianists Nathalie Fortin and Brad Schultz play a selection from a Mozart four-hand piano sonata.
Eugene Vocal Arts will open the concert with Haydn’s spirited Te Deum and perform Mozart’s reverent Ave Verum and a fun little ditty from Beethoven’s Scottish collection, O Swiftly Glides the Bonny Boat.
Join us as Eugene Vocal Arts and Eugene Concert Orchestra open our exciting 48th season with an enchanting salon concert experience.
