The Eugene Concert Choir was formed 50 years ago to perform Handel’s Messiah. It is fitting to present the grandeur of this beloved masterwork in its entirety. One of the greatest contributions the Eugene Concert Choir organization has made to the choral repertoire was the 2016 commission of this beautifully sensitive masterwork by Portland composer Joan Szymko, which met with audience acclaim and responses – “How did you know to tell my story?” Our world premiere performance and recording of this work won the American Prize and the video documentary The Story of Shadow and Light won Best Documentary at the 2017 Oregon Independent Film Festival.

Mozart Requiem & Bach Magnificat

Sunday, May 4, 2025 at 2:30 PM
Silva Concert Hall, Hult Center

We conclude our celebratory season with two of the greatest works by two of the greatest composers ever! In addition to the Eugene Concert Choir’s 50th Anniversary, this season also marks our 40th Season under the leadership of artistic director Dr. Diane Retallack. We are honoring her contributions and dedication to the choir with these two incredible masterworks, the Bach Magnificat, which was the first major choral work that Dr. Retallack chose to conduct in her very first season with the choir, 1985-1986, and the Mozart Requiem, one of her all-time favorite choral masterworks.
